Ingredients

Cuban sandwich and fries
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise

  • ¼ cup yellow mustard

  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper

  • 1 (8 ounce) loaf Cuban bread

  • 8 slices Swiss cheese

  • 6 thin slices smoked fully-cooked ham

  • 1⁄4 cup Italian salami, slice thinly

  • 1 large dill pickle, sliced thinly lengthwise

  • 2 tablespoons butter, or as needed

Directions

Prepare the Sauce:

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, mustard, and cayenne pepper. Set aside.

Prepare the Bread:

  1. Slice the loaf of Cuban bread into 4 equal pieces, then slice each piece lengthwise.

  2. Spread butter on the outside of each half and spread the mustard mixture on the inside of each half.

Assemble the Sandwiches:

Divide the ingredients evenly between the two bottom halves of the bread in the following order:

  1. 2 slices of Swiss cheese

  2. 3 slices of smoked ham

  3. A layer of Italian salami

  4. Pickle slices

  5. 2 more slices of Swiss cheese

  6. Place the top halves of the bread on each sandwich.

Cook the Sandwiches:

  1. Melt butter in a heavy skillet over medium heat.

  2. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and press down with a heavy weight, such as another skillet or foil-wrapped bricks.

  3. Toast the sandwiches until the bread is crisp and the filling is heated through, about 3 to 4 minutes per side.

Serve:

Remove from the skillet and let cool slightly.

Slice and serve warm.
